I have a degree in geology from the University of Maine at Farmington. My study was very busy with current interest in collecting minerals. I have collected for ten years now and has amassed a pretty decent collection of a variety of different minerals. Many of which came from mines located here in Maine. Some may believe that Maine is not a very good place for the collection of minerals, but this is not the case.
Maine has a very diverse geology, because the history of their formation of complexes. In consequence of this complex geological history of many pegmatite is in northwestern Maine. These mines have caused Maine’s reputation for some of the watermelon tourmaline finest in the world. Some of the larger crystals of beryl (aquamarine) were degraded ever found here. Along the coast runs a vein of different metals, which stretches from Down East Maine all the way to the border with New Hampshire. This is not a mine continuously, but if we follow this trend, they will find various mines along this coast. The mine is the most abundant in this region is the wealth of Callahan. This mine is Maine in the town of Brooksville, Hancock County.
It is currently closed and is no longer a working mine. He currently is in cleaning mode, because the mine to the DEP a list of the most polluted in the world. This is largely due to the fact that the mine is located in a tidal zone. The mine itself is fairly large, but visitors to the mine would not know. This is because the mine was flooded home. Minerals from the mine and the battery are now leaching into groundwater Talice large and the port. Thus, the visitor, the mine can by its size and abundance of various minerals to be impressed that can be found here, but never really know its true size. The pit is about one hundred meters deep and as wide flooding, similar to a large crater. I am here for some time to collect minerals, and I think the site is still open for the collection. It would still be wise to call ahead to find perhaps the office of the city to the current status.
Callahan Mine is a deposit of metallic sulfide ore classified. Minerals that was the mine worked for zinc and copper ore. Other minerals have been here allophane, aragonite, bornite, calcite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, gypsum, hematite, hornblende, mica, quartz, found gold, silver, sphalerite, sulfur, talc, titanite and marcasite. These are the most popular minerals here. Other less common minerals can be found here. This does not mean that the minerals are widely listed in this mine.
Is not there hope, a ton of gold or silver to be found. If a mineral is found in a mine, it will be included in the list of minerals found there, although the amount was extremely low. Minerals that I be personally collected on this site, pyrite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, talc, galena, pyrolusite. The most abundant pyrite that was. The place is loaded with pyrite. I collected samples of other minerals net that I have yet to be identified not taken the time. I took them, especially because I had no samples of them in my collection.
I strongly recommend this treasure trove for anyone interested in collecting minerals. There is also a good place to start the family on a nice day, only one eye on the children. Piles Talice here are quite large, consisting of large rocks. A heavy fall here could be quite fatal. It is good in the labor Talice. The area is huge and there are many safe places for children to hunt for minerals. The other danger is at the top of the hill. You’ll notice there’s behavior in the terrain there is a hill on the right. It is open cliff following mining. If you are around you can reach the top of this situation are on foot.
There are at least a drop of 50 meters from the top of the road, so also be careful here. You’ll see what I mean when you go there. I know I do it sounds dangerous, but believe me, there are many safe places to collect the samples. The ground is literally strewn with pure samples. The finest specimens are digging with some and a few hammer blows are found. Bring a hammer and a chisel with you. A review screen can also be useful to find some very well-trained cubic pyrite. The area is so large that it really explore more of a journey to the place. Every time I return, I am always finding something new. The shame is that the mine itself is flooded. I bet there are still are a few really good examples. Do not forget the core samples was on the ground floor on the left as you are in. These nuclei large and friendly to verify drive. Believe me, you can not miss.
Here are driving directions if you are interested in checking this mine.
From the intersection of Highways 175 and 176 in the City of Brooksville, 176th go west 4.5 miles on Route Turn left onto Cape Rosier Road and continue 1.65 miles. Turn right to go Goose Falls Road (gravel) and 0.9 miles where the road to turn right to the bird sanctuary. Go straight for 1 mile, cross the bridge to the Goose Gallen. Turn left onto Mine Road. Mine is in sight at this point. (Maine Mineral Localities EDT third. Thompson of the World Bank, Joyner DL, RG Woodman, King VT)
These guidelines are good, but hard to follow. At least they were for me. I have lost twice before they finally find the mine. The only thing I had going for me was that I knew I was in the right place. I drove around until I had the good fortune by chance and fell on her. If you want to save the trouble of doing. Look for the signs bird sanctuary and take this path. Follow to find the intersection of the mine, on the left side. The region is one big loop, so it is easy to take in a circle. Remember that it is on the dirt road straight ahead goes through the bird sanctuary. From the right path for mine is clearly visible.
If you are coming from the other direction, so that the ramp does not appear on the right side if you look over my shoulder. It can find a bit difficult, but it’s worth it. Once you turn on the way to the mine, you will pass a few houses to get to the mine. Just know that you are on the right path, even a dirt road. If you are there to have fun. It is good to go early, because you then spend the day. Also, make sure you have enough space for rehearsals, because you earn more than you need, or when.
